The Truth About
Jehovah’s Witnesses
What is the purpose of this site?
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD:
though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
(Isaiah 1:18. KJV)
The internet has many benefits: it is a source of a lot of factual information and is often used as a source of entertainment. Perhaps it is at its most useful when used for practical purposes, enabling those who are otherwise unable to do so to access services and products which are not easily accessible to them, invalids, for instance. We should not forget the study of God’s Word, the Bible, which has enabled many people to access information leading to a deep faith. It has many benefits.
However, along with the positive benefits come some that are not so beneficial. In fact, some can be very harmful. The internet and social media platforms are often used to disseminate false information, so much so, that it has become common to very strongly advise people that are seeking information on various subjects to check and double check that the statements made about that subject are accurate. There appear to be many people who get great pleasure from misleading others. These range from younger people playing jokes, to others who seek to spread false information out of a malicious nature, or to manipulate other people’s behaviour. Criminals may also be found there, including fraudsters and pedophiles or voyeurs. Antis are not uncommon: that is, people who are against almost every human endeavour, whether reasonable or not, whether logical or not. This includes some who are full of hatred for particular segments of society, whether it be racial, social, religious or based on something else they do not like.
This site is concerned with the anti-religious comments and activities of those who, from misunderstanding, disagreement, hatred or disdain, mislead others about one particular religious group: that is, Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some of the comments made about Jehovah’s Witnesses are merely differences of opinion on what a particular verse or verses in the bible mean. Valid discussions may be had with those and Jehovah’s Witnesses are always ready and willing to discuss the bible and explain their understanding of what it says. On the other hand, there are some on the internet, often on social sites such as Quora, who target Jehovah’s Witnesses and who often make claims that are either fundamentally incorrect; are distortions of Jehovah’s Witnesses beliefs that are designed to make Jehovah’s Witnesses appear as nasty, unpleasant people; or which degenerate into blatant malice and plain hate speech.
It should be made clear at the outset that most Jehovah’s Witnesses do not get angry at hate comments, although in any large group of people who are subjected to hate, some will react emotionally. However, this does not usually last for long and the emotional response quickly reverts to calm acceptance, coupled with a tinge of pity for the person displaying the hatred. The calm acceptance comes from understanding that Jesus Christ made it clear to his followers that they would be subjected to this kind of hatred and opposition. In the Gospel of John chapter 15, verses 18 and 19, Jesus said, "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you." Jehovah’s Witnesses firmly believe that they are followers of Christ, and as followers of Christ they are not surprised when they are subjected to hateful actions and hate speech, although it is still not a pleasant experience. Knowing that they are being treated hatefully because they follow the example of Jesus does, however, make the experience more tolerable and reinforces their belief that they are on the right spiritual track, the "narrow road" that Jesus referred to. Rather than respond in like manner to their opponents, Jehovah’s Witnesses instead prefer to follow the advice of Jesus, who instructed them in how to respond to hateful attack. He said, in Matthew 5:43-44, "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you".
Why do Jehovah’s Witnesses view those who attack them with a tinge of pity? It is due to their belief that such people are being misled by Jehovah’s great opponent, the one who tempted Jesus following his baptism, when God acknowledged him as his son and blessed him. The pity is because they understand that those people are working against Jehovah’s goals for manking by attacking those who try earnestly to do what God wants and to live their lives in harmony with the bible and according to the instructions given by Jesus. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not, however, take actions that can be seen as any form of retribution against these people, recognising that Jesus had forbidden it and had suggesting a different course of action, one that could be described as loving consideration. In Romans 12:17-21, the Apostle Paul advises Christians that they should "Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." If there is any retribution to come, then that is the prerogative of Jehovah, not humans. Keep in mind at all times that Jehovah has made it clear that he wants as many as is possible to side with him. 2 Peter, 3:9 says, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." He is "not willing that any should perish". He wants all mankind to take advantage of the sacrifice made by Jesus to bring mankind into a proper relationship with him.
Part of the process of feeding others (in a spiritual sense) is to help them properly understand what Jehovah’s Witnesses believe and do, and the bible based reasons behind it. I shall explain why many statements made about Jehovah’s Witnesses are incorrect and tell you what we are truly about.
Please note that in the English pages I have used the King James Version of the bible, and unless specified otherwise, all quotations are from that translation. If you prefer another translation in any other language, by all means use that. I have not used the New World Translation since so much negative critical nonsense has been written about it that some readers may have come to believe that there is something wrong with it. In fact there is nothing wrong with it. It is a completely valid, modern English translation that is easily understood. Deriding it is just another way that opponents of Jehovah’s Witnesses seek to arouse animosity against us. If you do not have a bible, ask any Jehovah’s Witness to give you a copy. They will provide you with a copy at no cost, according to Jesus’ instruction in Matthew 10:8, "Freely ye have received, freely give".
